Q1. How I think this capability would be most effectively used.

I think that the most efficient use of this technology will be when the user can switch auto-translation via gesture so that he can also see the original content / translation anytime if needed.  The user should see the basic info regarding objects in his gaze so that he can make more intelligent decisions. This feature can also bring people from different cultures together. The world will become an even smaller place. The public transport travel may also become easier as you will see all the next destination of the vehicle in real-time.

Q2. Pros and cons of this technology if I was running this in a future AR pair of glasses or contact lenses

PROS :

1.  The best part about AR, in my opinion, is that it can make your imagination come true.

2. Can provide useful information in real-time.

3. Will make reading documents in foreign language very easy.

4. Will make travelling to whole new levels of excitement.

5. Will make a real-time analyzation of things like charts or data sheets easy.

CONS :

1.  Can cause epilepsy if a user is prone to such things.

2. The essence of the original text may sometimes get lost in translation.

3. Sometimes the user may get so immersed in AR that he may hurt himself accidentally.

4. If prone to data hacks the privacy of the user may get hurt.

Q3. How much control do you think the user should have over the way the synthetic is mapped over the real.

In my opinion, it is upon the user to decide how much synthetic he wants over the real world as I believe that everyone has their own preferences. Some people may want so much synthetic that their surroundings may seem like middle earth world to them while some may want to keep it limited to basic tasks like translation and basic information gathering.
