WEEK 11 - Collaboration

Positives:-

1. Cool & Helpful Science:-

When I saw that model of the ear and its inside organs in class the first thing that went through my mind was how helpful and cool this VR thing is. Coming to Hololens, the link given by professor on the page of week 11 that has a review by Shahram Izadi covers almost all good points of the Hololens (which I am going to breakdown in this homework). When you combine the idea of accurate 3D models of complex organs with the flexibility given by Hololens, there is not much left that can't be achieved by this awesome technology in field medical science(especially organ observation). Students can also benefit from the above mentioned feature as they can observe different organs to the most minute details. Studying the organs with these details will give far better ideas to the students and those from the books.

2. Next Generation Communication:-

The video shows the communication between Shahram and his daughter is Star Wars like, which is cool but more importantly it gives the feeling of the presence of the person whom you are talking to, which is a milestone of its own to achieve. This can be a real gamechanger in the field of communication(calling) in the future. Just imagine talking to your loved ones who are on the other side of the planet like they are right there with you. Now that is an impressive feat to achieve.

3. Modeling of unreachable things/beings:-

If this technology evolves correctly it can be applied to get models of things that are unreachable by humans at the current time like the deep caves in the high mountains and more importantly it can be applied to get models deep in the sea (like Mariana trench). As we know more than ninety percent of the sea is unexplored and more than 95% of its species are unknown to humankind.

Negatives:-

1. The Cost:-

The cost of this technology is insane as the price starts around 3500$. It could be affordable by big organizations with big fundings like our university but it is not affordable by the students like me who barely get by after paying the rent. The cost of this technology will definitely get lowered once it becomes a household device in the future but it is far away from the possibility at the moment. Cost is a big factor in the limitation of the broadcast of this technology. The time when this technology becomes affordable will be the time this will become a common house gadget, just like our phones.

2. The Complex Setup:-

With the current setup, Hololens uses eight cameras to fully get the depth of the target. As awesome as its features are, it is just as difficult to set up the whole hardware in your room. There is also a factor of latency which keeps it from giving that feeling of perfection. Though I am very certain that this is only because of the heavy calculations that the system has to do in order to detect the target's parameters. To keep the latency to the minimum it probably needs better hardware which again will increase the cost of the hardware creating the vicious cycle.

3. Slow Growth of Technology:-

The slow growth of technology is also a big hindering factor in the development of gadgets like this device. Generally, technologies like this require huge funding plus a lot of research which are both huge challenges in themselves. These technologies require a lot of effort to develop as they are unprecedented and lack the proper guidance because of the unprecedence of the stuff. When technology takes time to develop, people starts to lose interest fast and that affects funding as investors keep an eye on these kinds of things. Losing interest in technology also affects its research as no new scholars want to work in thing that is not famous in market.
